Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea has signed a two-year extension with Sunderland.

O’Shea’s current contract was set to expire at the end of this season, but the new deal will extend his stay at the Stadium of Light at least until the summer of 2016.

The Irishman, who joined the Black Cats from Manchester United in 2011, has made 121 appearances and is the current club captain.

Gus Poyet is delighted with the 33-year-old’s extension and said that the defender is a key leadership figure at the club.

“I am delighted that John has agreed to stay with us for at least another two years”, the manager told the club’s official site

“He is our captain, one of our leaders and I am sure he will continue to help us get better and stronger as a team. I really look forward to continuing to work with John.”

O’Shea also earned his 100th cap for Ireland in the 1-1 draw against Germany earlier this week.

The 33-year-old is a product of Manchester United’s youth academy and made 381 appearances for the club before leaving in 2011.
