Premier League outfit Southampton have confirmed that midfielder Steven Davis has signed a contract extension with the club and will remain at St Mary's Stadium until June 2018.

The 29-year-old has been impressive for the Saints over the course of the last two seasons, having managed a total of 73 appearances and scoring six goals.

The Northern Ireland skipper has continued with his form this term as well and is regarded as a mainstay of Ronald Koeman's midfield, having played five of the seven league matches for the team so far.

Davis for his part insists that it is an honour for him to have been able to sign a new contract and he is also excited to see how far the team can go in the course of the next few years.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract. I’ve enjoyed my football since I came here and the club is continually progressing", Davis told his club's official site.

“I’m excited to see where we can go together over the next few years. The club is run the right way and they try to do everything to their best ability.

"Nobody wants to stand still, we want to get better, that goes for the team and myself.

"I’d like to win trophies here and continually try to improve our league position. I feel we can do that at this club."

Southampton are currently placed third in the Premier League table with 13 points from seven matches and will host Sunderland this weekend.
