Former Netherlands and Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert has insisted that he is ready to strike out on his own after revealing that he knew his mentor Louis van Gaal would work with Ryan Giggs at Manchester United.

Kluivert started his coaching career at Dutch outfit FC Twente, where was in charge of the youth and reserve teams, before becoming assistant to then-Netherlands manager Van Gaal in 2012.

However, the 38-year-old left his post along with Van Gaal after guiding the Oranje to third place in the World Cup in Brazil.

And Kluivert, who was tipped in some corners to become Van Gaal’s assistant at Old Trafford, explained that he is now focused on stamping his own identity as a head coach.

"I am now ready for the role of a head coach, that’s what I did with Van Gaal too”, he told Helden.

“He also thinks I must now stand on my own feet.

"I knew early on that he would work at Manchester United with someone from the club, Ryan Giggs."

Kluivert further added that he would prefer a coaching job abroad rather than in the Netherlands.

"I want to do well at a club, preferably a club abroad. Italy, Spain and Germany have my preference over the Netherlands. But that is just a thought.”
