Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has explained that he is confident about his side reaching the heights of last season.

The Reds, who played a free-flowing attacking brand of football last term, finished just two points and a place behind champions Manchester City in the Premier League.

However, Liverpool have endured a shaky beginning to their 2014/15 Premier League campaign and presently find themselves fifth in the standings with 13 points from eight games, nine behind leaders Chelsea.

In addition, the Merseyside giants, who will face Real Madrid in a Champions League fixture at Anfield tonight, have not been in good form in Europe as well after losing 1-0 to FC Basel earlier in the month.

But Gerrard, who feels Luis Suarez’s departure to Barcelona coupled with Daniel Sturridge’s injury have a lot to do with Liverpool’s stop-start beginning to the present campaign, believes his side have the ability to reproduce last season’s form.

"There have been quite a few changes coming in; everyone is well aware that we've lost a phenomenal player in Luis Suarez and we've also struggled to get Daniel Sturridge onto the field”, the 34-year-old told a press conference.

"So it's only natural that we're going to have some teething problems before we hit the heights that we did last season.

“I have huge confidence and belief in this group of players that we can get back to the form and level of last season. It won't be very long.”
