Former AC Milan manager Cesare Maldini feels Mario Balotelli has been the subject of much unfair criticism of late, especially following last night's events.

The Italian striker was taken off at half-time after another poor display in Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at Real Madrid’s hands last night.

Balotelli has scored just once for Liverpool this season and his decision to swap shirts at the break with Real Madrid’s Pepe has received heavy criticism from all quarters.

But Maldini feels that the issue has been blown out of proportion and Balotelli has faced unfair criticism since last night.

The former Milan manager feels that Balotelli’s attitude is such that every small transgression on his part is always blown out of proportion.

“The issue of Balotelli swapping shirts at half time is a small matter”, the octogenarian told 103.3 FM Radio Popolare Roma.

“The fact is that there is always something about him. The press treats him well but he cannot live peacefully, because there is always someone who is looking forward to taking him down.

“I do not think that it is fair treatment.”

He also feels that Balotelli needs to start behaving as a professional footballer and be more responsible.

“Of course he needs to improve”, Maldini added.

“He needs to learn to live like a professional footballer.”
