Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that West Ham managed to survive in the Premier League over the last two seasons only because of Sam Allardyce’s management, while he has also questioned the esteemed 'West Ham way'.

West Ham have made a flying start to the new campaign and are currently fourth in the Premier League. Allardyce has also earned praise for the Hammers’ attractive style of play this term.

However, the West Ham manager faced criticism for his side’s style of play in recent years, and fans accused the manager of deviating from the ‘West Ham way’.

But Ferguson fails to understand the West Ham fans’ criticism and said they have been lucky to survive in the top flight at all.

The Scot also feels Allardyce’s management is the reason why West Ham survived in the Premier League in the last couple of seasons with average players.

"I hope that before I die, someone can explain the 'West Ham way'. What is it? They last won a trophy in 1980, the FA Cup”, Ferguson wrote in his updated autobiography.

"I never played against any West Ham team that played football I was afraid of. They were always surviving, or lucky as hell against us.

"I had to sympathise with Sam. He couldn't win. There is this preconception with West Ham fans that Big Sam is a survivalist who tells teams to boot the ball up the pitch.

"The truth is that he stayed up with a team of very average players. That's management. He drew the best from them."
