Jack Cork has insisted that Southampton started better against Stoke City yesterday than they did against Sunderland last weekend.

After a difficult summer, where Southampton lost a number of influential players, the club have made a rousing start to the new season and are currently second in the league table.

After an 8-0 drubbing of Sunderland, the Saints recorded a 1-0 win over Stoke City yesterday at the St. Mary’s Stadium.

But the Saints midfielder feels that they made a better start against the Potters than they did against the Black Cats.

“I think first half we started a lot better than we did last week”, Cork told the club’s official site.

“That was our sort of main aim towards this game, because in the first 20 minutes we gave Sunderland a bit too much of the ball and this game was completely different.

“Second half, we held on. They came back strongly, like we knew they would, and made it harder for us second half.”

The 25-year-old admits that in the euphoria of their thumping win over Sunderland, it was almost forgotten that the Black Cats dominated the initial exchanges between the two teams and that needed to be changed against Stoke yesterday.

“We had to sit through the whole first 20 minutes. We expected it anyway. It’s weird because after 8-0, any little thing that you do that is not normal, everyone sort of jumps on saying ‘what are you doing?’

“You take notice of little things you don’t usually pick up because you won 8-0 and you don’t want people to get carried away.”

The Saints will again take on Stoke on Wednesday at the Britannia Stadium in a League Cup game.
