James Milner feels a section of Newcastle United fans do not like him because he has won trophies which have eluded the Magpies since his departure for Manchester City.

The England international, who spent four trophyless seasons at St. James' Park between 2004 and 2008, has won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup since joining the Citizens from Aston Villa in 2010.

However, Milner insists that he holds no grudges against the Newcastle faithful, ahead of Manchester City’s League Cup fixture against his former club tomorrow.

The 28-year-old further backed Newcastle to end their long trophy drought over the coming years.

“I’ve had a few mixed receptions in all honesty but generally not too bad”, Milner explained to Manchester City’s official site.

“I was warming up earlier this season and I had the odd shout from the stands which wasn’t ideal, but everyone is entitled to their opinion and people are understandably loyal to their team.

“The bottom line is that I had good time at Newcastle and they are a big club who are desperate for success.

“Maybe I’ve taken the brunt of one of two of the fans’ frustrations because I’ve been fortunate enough to win one or two trophies and unfortunately Newcastle haven’t, but St. James’ Park is a great place to play football and hopefully the club will have some success at some point.”

Milner, who has a further year left on his current contract with Manchester City, has thus far amassed 170 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 12 times.
