Luke Shaw admits that having Wayne Rooney back in the Manchester United squad for this Sunday’s Manchester derby is a ‘massive boost’ for the club.

Rooney received a three-match suspension after he was sent off against West Ham last month.

The Manchester United captain is expected to feature when his side take on Manchester City next weekend at the Etihad Stadium and Shaw admits that having the club captain back in the squad is a ‘massive boost’ for the Red Devils.

"It's a massive boost for us to have him back", the 19-year-old was quoted as saying by FIFA.

"It's something I think he's looking forward to. Wayne hates sitting on the sidelines watching. That goal [in 2011 against Manchester City] was an unbelievable goal in a match that big. It was something special."

Even though he arrived in Old Trafford this summer, the full-back is aware of the rich history of the Manchester derby and knows how much a victory on derby day means to the supporters and for the club.

“It's pretty obvious what this match means to the fans and the club. I don't think I need to be told about it and the other [new signings] will be aware too", the Surrey-born teenager said.

"I've watched it for the past years and I've seen how much it means to everyone. It's a massive occasion for everyone involved in it. We need to come out firing on Sunday."

Rooney is the top goalscorer in the Manchester derby with eleven goals for the Red Devils.
