Manuel Pellegrini has insisted that Manchester City are taking the League Cup seriously this season too.

The Citizens will host Newcastle United in a League Cup game later tonight at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City are the defending champions in the tournament and Pellegrini insisted that they are taking the League Cup seriously this season too.

He said that the tournament is an opportunity to bolster their trophy cabinet and though he would ideally like to win the Premier League, the League Cup is no less important for the club and the fans, so a win tonight against the Magpies is important.

“It is very important for the club to win trophies”, the Chilean told the club’s official site.

“I transmit the mentality to the players that every game you play is one you must try to win.

“If you ask me if I prefer to win the Premier League, maybe, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t want to win the Capital One Cup which is why we are involving the whole squad in this game.”

Manchester City have won the League Cup three times in 1970, 1976 and last season.
