Bryan Robson feels Wayne Rooney should be extra careful about his discipline as he is the Manchester United captain now, and revealed he has spoken to the England international about his behaviour.

Rooney received a straight red against West Ham last month which meant that he was unavailable for the last three games due to suspension.

The former Manchester United captain has lauded the England captain’s attitude towards the game and believes he is an example for young footballers.

But he believes that Rooney needs to keep a check on his enthusiasm and be more careful about his discipline due to his status as club captain.

"The way Wayne goes about the game, works hard for his team-mates and works hard for himself, is an example to everyone", Robson said at a Q&A session at Old Trafford.

"The one thing Wayne has to take on board is that he's under even more scrutiny now.

"We saw him get sent off recently and, as a captain, you can’t be doing that.

"But Wayne knows that – I spoke with him at the training ground after the incident and he's well aware of it.”

Robson also added that he feels Rooney has calmed down a lot over the years and is a lot more mature now. He believes that the extra responsibility of leading the Manchester United side means he will cut down on his mistakes in the future.

"He's calmed down an awful lot in recent years.

"When he was 18 he hadn't matured; now it looks like he's beyond that.

"But in my mind I think he's done that because he's keen to impress, desperate to show people he cares. I don't think it'll happen again."

Rooney is doubtful for the derby against Manchester City on Sunday as he was limping in a recent sponsor event at Old Trafford.
