Louis van Gaal has revealed that when Manchester United lose it spoils his week, in a similar way to the club's fans, with Sunday's game against Manchester City something he understands the importance of.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford in the summer fresh from having led the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup and also as a vastly experienced manager, with spells at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich under his belt.

But despite having been in the game for so long, losing still ruins Van Gaal's week, and nothing more so than going down in a derby, meaning he feels he can empathise with the Manchester United faithful.

And the situation is even more pronounced with the Manchester derby on Sunday, in which local bragging rights will be on the line.

He told MUTV: "When you lose, it’s a very bad week for the Manchester United fans but also for the manager of Manchester United.

"I can assure you of that."

Manchester United warmed up for the Manchester derby by playing out a 1-1 draw with Chelsea last weekend, while Manchester City went down to a shock 2-0 defeat in the League Cup at home to Newcastle United in midweek.
