Ayoze Perez has revealed that he was close to joining Portuguese giants FC Porto in the summer before eventually moving to Newcastle United.

Schooled in Tenerife’s youth system, the 21-year-old joined Newcastle in July and initially struggled to become accustomed to English football.

But Newcastle’s current good form has coincided with Perez finding his touch and he scored both the winning goals against Tottenham and Liverpool in their last two league fixtures.

However, Perez claims that he almost joined Portuguese giants Porto before Newcastle came into the picture.

He said that the Porto deal was almost done, but they failed to agree on minor details, which stalled his move to Portugal.

“I was very close to signing for FC Porto, but we could not reach an agreement on some small details”, the Spaniard told Cadena SER.

“I had to think of a general perspective.

"Newcastle appreciated my game and therefore I chose to come to the Premier League.”

Perez has earned two caps for Spain’s Under-21 national team.
