Italy’s World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro has been appointed as the new coach of Guangzhou Evergrande.

Marcello Lippi retired from his position at the Chinese club earlier this week after guiding them to their fourth successive league title.

Lippi will continue to be the technical director at Guangzhou, but Cannavaro will handle the day-to-day affairs of the club on the pitch as the executive head coach.

"I couldn't do anything when my family had issues, I couldn't stand that I had to visit home [only] every six months", Lippi was quoted as saying by FIFA.

"So I suggested the team should find an executive head coach, which would allow me to visit home every two months."

Cannavaro had a glittering career at Parma, Juventus and Real Madrid and led Italy to their fourth World Cup win in 2006.
