Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has dubbed his side's first goal, scored by Ayoze Perez, as worthy of winning any game, after his men beat West Brom 2-0 at the Hawthornes today.

Pardew's men took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Perez continued his goalscoring form, hitting a superb backheeled shot from around 12 yards out to give the Magpies an advantage.

Newcastle then doubled their lead through defender Fabricio Coloccini in the 62nd minute, killing off any serious West Brom hopes of getting back into the game.

And Newcastle comfortably saw out the contest, claiming three valuable Premier League points.

Pardew was delighted with the character his team showed and even more delighted with Perez's goal, which he lauded.

"It was a really professional and disciplined performance. They stuck to the game plan and the players are carrying it out to the letter", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"But you still need moments to inspire and the first goal was really special and worthy of winning any game."

Pardew also believes his side are benefiting from a strong spine.

"We see it in training so it's no surprise. The strength of the team is our spine – [Moussa] Sissoko, [Jack] Colback, Coloccini, [Paul] Dummett and [Tim] Krul – but the whole team played well today.

"We are up the league where a club of this size should be. We've been very simple in what we've done in terms of our goals, we've kept them realistic."

Newcastle have now won their last five games in a row.
