Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn admits that young starlet Kalvin Phillips is knocking on the door of the first team after impressing at Under-21 level.

Phillips is a player Redfearn knows well from his time working with the Leeds academy and the young talent impressed in a recent game against Nottingham Forest, scoring twice.

Redfearn has promised to give young talents their chance at Elland Road and he admits that Phillips is now pushing to be involved at senior level.

"Yes [he’s pushing to be involved]", Redfearn told LUTV.

"The good thing is there's light for these boys now and they can see that. And they're capable.

"Kalvin Phillips is a prime example. Alex Purver's got a squad number now and there's light for these lads at the end of the tunnel because they are capable."

The Leeds boss also feels the club's senior professionals are well aware he will continue to promote young players and hand them first team chances.

"I think to be fair to the senior boys they've accepted that. They know these lads are going to come into the squad and there's now good competition. I think it's making it healthy."

However, Redfearn is keen to temper expectations by insisting it will take time for young talents to adapt to the cut and thrust of the Championship.

"I think we've got to take it step by step and not look too far ahead. They are young and they are learning. They've got great potential, but the Championship is a tough and unforgiving league."
