AC Milan are eyeing a January move for Stuttgart’s Japanese international full-back Gotoku Sakai.

A natural right-back, Sakai can also play on the left and initially arrived at Stuttgart on a loan deal in January 2012 from Japanese outfit Albirex Niigata before the move was made permanent last summer.

Sakai is a regular in the Stuttgart team and his performances in Germany are attracting considerable interest from clubs across Europe.

Milan, who already have Japan’s Keisuke Honda in their ranks, are looking to add defensive reinforcements in January and have been tracking Sakai over the last few months.

His performances have done enough to convince Milan and the club are keen to make a January move for the Japanese international, according to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato.

Sakai’s contract with Stuttgart runs until 2016 and it remains to be seen what sort of fee will convince the German outfit to part with the Japanese full-back in January.

Sakai has made 97 appearances for Stuttgart and has earned 16 international caps for Japan.
