Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Daniel Sturridge’s latest injury setback has come as a big blow for the club and promised an investigation into the England star's constant niggles.

The striker, who picked up a thigh injury while on international duty with England in September, was recovering from a calf strain when he injured his thigh in training earlier in the week.

Scans later revealed that Sturridge has slightly torn his thigh muscle which will sideline him for the rest of this year.

It is the 25-year-old’s third injury of the season, meaning he has not featured for Liverpool since their 3-0 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur on 31st August.

And Rodgers, who insisted that it was Sturridge’s ninth thigh injury of his career, confirmed the club are now contemplating launching an investigation into the forward’s recurring thigh problems.

"It's hugely disappointing to lose a player of that quality”, he explained to the club’s official site.

"It happened in a session and it was quite innocuous. He did it when he just flicked the ball, it wasn't a shot or anything that looked serious.

"But obviously he felt the pain and then when the medical team told me the next day after the scan it was disappointing.

"Whether Daniel needs to see a specialist is something that the medical team are looking into.

"I think that's his ninth injury on that thigh from previous clubs and here so there is an issue there somewhere.

"The scan shows a slight tear just below where he had a previous injury."

Liverpool, who are currently 11th in the Premier League with 14 points, have struggled for goals in Sturridge’s absence.
