Wayne Rooney is delighted with Manchester United's 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium today, explaining the game plan was to hit the Gunners on the break.

Arsenal were the dominant side in the early exchanges at the Emirates Stadium, but could find no way through a stubborn Manchester United backline.

The Gunners' frustration was shown by Jack Wilshere, who appeared to try and head-butt Marouane Fellaini in the 29th minute.

Arsenal continued to huff and puff, but Manchester United looked dangerous on the break and took the lead in the 56th minute through an own goal from Kieran Gibbs.

The Gunners continued to push, further affected by losing Jack Wilshere to an ankle injury, and even threw on Olivier Giroud.

But Manchester United hit Arsenal on the break in the 84th minute, Wayne Rooney getting on the end of a fine Angel di Maria pass to make it 2-0.

Giroud did score, hitting a superb 20-yard goal, but it was too little too late.

And a delighted Rooney explained hitting Arsenal on the break was key to Manchester United's plans.

"I think it's a very important victory. We weathered the storm at times, especially first half, and we knew we could hit them on the counter attack. We knew they were vulnerable, especially on the break, and we did that today", he told Sky Sports.

"They had possession, we hit them on the break, which was our game plan.

"We knew if we could get as many players in the defence as we could, and we did that with five at the back, we knew we had the legs with Robin [van Persie], Angel and myself on the break."
