Louis van Gaal has lauded his Manchester United youngsters for their performance against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, but challenged them to "do better".

The Red Devils ran out 2-1 winners over the Gunners in the Premier League clash, with goals from Kieran Gibbs (own goal) and Wayne Rooney only able to be answered by a late Olivier Giroud strike.

It was Van Gaal's first win away from home as Manchester United manager and youngsters Luke Shaw (19), Paddy McNair (19) and Tyler Blackett (20) all played their part.

"I think the players have done fantastic. Blackett, McNair and Luke Shaw – how old are they?", Van Gaal told the BBC.

"You play against a top team like Arsenal and they are always changing position, so you need a lot of communication. I think that is pretty good. But I was not pleased."

The Dutchman though thinks there is much more in the tank from the young starlets and challenged them to show it.

"You can say when you play with this squad, with players like Paddy McNair, Tyler Blackett and also Luke Shaw, and [Chris] Smalling between them, you can say after the match it was good.

"But they can do better, I believe."
