Chris Smalling expects Manchester United to be much more consistent once they can field a settled side on the pitch this season.

Despite suffering from 40 different injuries this term and with only one senior central defender fit, Manchester United inflicted a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday to get back into the top four.

Though it was their first away win of the season, Louis van Gaal still has serious cause for concern with the likes of Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Rafael, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans still out with various injury problems.

And Smalling admits that Manchester United are not enjoying the luxury of fielding a settled side at the moment, which has led to inconsistent performances.

But the defender feels Manchester United will show more consistency once Van Gaal has a settled squad to pick his eleven from.

"Each team thrives on a settled side", Smalling told the club’s official site.

"I think if you look at the teams towards the top of the table that's something they have benefitted from, maybe making just one or two changes each week. We don't have that luxury at the moment.

“But we'll stick together – all the players are in it as a group – and when we do get a settled side I think you'll start to see the consistency we're all striving for."

Radamel Falcao is back in training and Jones and Evans are also expected to join training this week.
