Southampton have moved into pole position to win the race for Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca, dubbed the "new Zlatan Ibrahimovic".

The 15-year-old spent time at PSV Eindhoven's training ground recently and the Eredivisie side were confident of tempting him to continue his development in the Netherlands.

However, they have been passed in the race for the 1.94m tall striker by Southampton, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Ronald Koeman's men are now in pole position to snap up Scamacca, with his move to England appearing to be a matter of when and not if.

Scamacca, who is on the books at Roma, can only move on 1st January however, at which time he will turn 16.

The young Italian has earned comparisons with Ibrahimovic, something which was further emphasised by PSV's coaching staff when they saw him at close quarters.
