Brendan Rodgers has praised Raheem Sterling’s performance against Manchester United and believes the winger has been Liverpool’s main attacking threat this season.

Sterling was played as a striker last Sunday as the Red Devils handed out a 3-0 drubbing to Liverpool at Old Trafford.

He was presented with several golden opportunities to get the Reds back into the game, but the outstanding David de Gea in Manchester United’s goal regularly denied Sterling.

Rodgers feels the 20-year-old should have converted a few of the opportunities, but was pleased with the overall performance of the youngster in such a big game.

The Liverpool manager believes playing him in the central striker’s role at Old Trafford wasn’t a gamble as Sterling has been the Reds’ most attacking threat this season.

"He maybe could have got a goal at the weekend, but I thought he was absolutely outstanding. He puts defenders on the back foot”, Rodgers told a press conference.

“He's intelligent in his game, his running ability, speed and ability to press the ball.

"He's getting himself into some wonderful positions. The kid has been a real catalyst for us, in terms of our attacking threat. He's such a big talent and he's just turned 20 years of age.”

Rumours of Sterling stalling on signing a new deal at Liverpool are doing the rounds and Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in the winger.
