Phil Jones has insisted that Manchester United never lost faith in David de Gea’s ability and even when the Spaniard was going through a rough patch, the club were aware of his talents.

De Gea has been in phenomenal form this season and club captain Wayne Rooney termed him the best goalkeeper in the world after the Spaniard gave another eye-catching performance in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Liverpool last Sunday.

The former Atletico Madrid man made some first-rate saves to deny Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli and kept Liverpool at bay at Old Trafford.

Jones, who was part of the back three against Liverpool, said that De Gea is a wonderful person to train with and admits that the club are lucky to have a man of the Spaniard’s talents in goal.

"He is terrific to work with", Jones told the club’s official site.

"Off the field he is a great lad; he is very humble and quiet. On the pitch, we are lucky to have him.”

De Gea was criticised for some of his early performances when he first arrived in 2011 and some suspected that he was not suited to English football.

But Jones insisted that the club and his team-mates were firmly behind the Spaniard as they were aware of the talent the man possessed.

“After coming to the club, he had a difficult spell in his first year. But even going through that, we saw the ability he had in training and some of the saves he makes are unbelievable.

“We have seen what he is like and throughout the season he has been a credit to himself."
