Arsenal legend Thierry Henry insists he did not have to retire.

Henry, 37, hung up his boots earlier this week following the end of his contract with MLS side New York Red Bulls.

The Frenchman has taken up a job as a pundit with British broadcaster Sky Sports, but claims he could have carried on playing if he had wished, with his body not giving up on him.

"I could have continued, it's just logical", he told Telefoot.

"But you need to know when to stop", Henry added.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that Henry will return to the Emirates Stadium, but when and in what capacity he cannot say.

"He will be back at Arsenal one day. Coach? Manager? Director? I do not know", Wenger said earlier this week.

"I think he must first take a step back and think about what he really wants to do in his new life.

"To become a coach is to have a life of sacrifice. We choose this profession only after really deciding.

"What is certain is that Thierry will remain in the football universe.

"He will be a world-class pundit in the media."
