Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has made Michael Carrick vice-captain at the club amid Darren Fletcher struggling for minutes.

Fletcher was made Wayne Rooney's deputy during pre-season, but has managed only 49 minutes of football since August, while Carrick, back from an ankle injury, has started in all six of Manchester United's current six-game winning run.

And Van Gaal considers the English midfielder to be Rooney's deputy at present.

"I have three captains", Van Gaal was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three."

And Van Gaal has great respect for Carrick and what he brings to the table at Old Trafford, feeling too that the midfielder understands the way he wants the game to be played.

"He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure.

"He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch."
