Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling has been voted Golden Boy 2014, following in the footsteps of stars such as Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, past recipients of the accolade.

The Golden Boy award was established by Italian daily Tuttosport and recognises the best young player under 21 years old over the course of a calendar year.

And Sterling has been handed the accolade, becoming the first Liverpool player to win the award and also only the second Englishman, following Wayne Rooney in 2004.

The 20-year-old was delighted upon receiving the award and considers it credit to his hard work and determination to improve.

"It's always a great achievement to win such an award like this. Obviously it's a really happy feeling for me and my family", he told LFC TV.

"It's something that I have always wanted to do: work hard playing football and be recognised.

"As a young player everyone dreams of being an Aguero and a Messi, but it's just down to hard work and I'm really happy that people are recognising that I'm working hard and trying to do my best for this football club. So I'm really grateful for this award.

"I think there's always room for improvement and at this moment in time I should be a few goals up, but I've not taken some of my chances this year.

"I'm young and I'm learning all the time and this award just shows that hard work gets you where you want to be. And I'm on the right track for where I want to be in my career. So hopefully I can keep working hard and take my game to the next level really."
