West Ham and Cameroon midfielder Alex Song has announced his retirement from international football just before the start of the African Cup of Nations.

The 27-year-old midfielder has not featured for his country since he was sent off in a World Cup group game against Croatia last summer.

Song flew back to his homeland to discuss the possibility of playing for Cameroon in the African Cup of Nations that is scheduled to start on 17th January in Equatorial Guinea.

But talks between the player and the Cameroonian FA broke down and the former Arsenal man announced his retirement from international football.

Song said on Instagram:"My love for my country will never change.

"I want to take time to focus purely on domestic football and start to rebuild my career at West Ham United.

"It is true that there were some discussions of late to include me in the squad for this tournament”, the midfielder continued.

“But I feel after a lot of careful thought and numerous discussions with my family this is the right decision."

Song earned 47 international caps for Cameroon and will now be available to play for West Ham this month.
