Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has played down his interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, claiming that at present he is looking for defensively minded players.

Wenger has been linked with raiding Dortmund to snap up Gundogan, but the midfielder is not currently occupying the manager's thoughts.

Indeed, for Wenger defence is the priority in the current transfer window, a need only increased by a recent injury to Mathieu Debuchy which rules him out for three months.

Asked about interest in Gundogan at a press conference today, Wenger replied: "He’s not a defender.

"At the moment we are more looking for the defensive department [than the attacking department]."

Gundogan is one of a number of Dortmund players to have been linked with joining Wenger in north London.

Indeed, Dortmund stars Marco Reus and Mats Hummels are also thought to interest the Gunners boss.
