Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that striker Jermain Defoe was not required at White Hart Lane post his return from the MLS.

The England striker joined Premier League outfit Sunderland today on a three-and-a-half-year deal after returning from Toronto FC this month.

And the former Southampton manager is happy for the 32-year-old, who he believes is a "very good striker".

"All the best for Jermain in his new era in his career", Pochettino was quoted as saying by the BBC, before looking ahead to facing Sunderland at the weekend.

"Always, we need to be focused on our players, but Defoe is a big finisher and a very good striker."

The Lilywhites have three strikers, namely Harry Kane, Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, in their squad at present and the 42-year-old insists that he had no further requirement for yet another striker in the form of Defoe.

"He showed his quality here and in the last season at Toronto.

"But we have three great strikers and we are confident in our players."

Defoe could return to White Hart Lane on Saturday as the Black Cats prepare to play Tottenham in the Premier League.
