Sunderland new boy Jermain Defoe has described his new club as a special one, insisting that both the manager and the players at Stadium of Light have been great.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man, who returned to England after spending eleven months in the MLS, signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Black Cats last week.

He in fact made his debut for the club during Saturday's match against his old club Tottenham, a match that his team lost 2-1.

Describing his experience at his new club, the 32-year-old explained that both Gus Poyet and his new team-mates have been really helpful, making the transition process easier for him.

"It's been good and it always helps knowing a few of the players when signing for a new club. The lads have been great", Defoe told a press conference.

"I spoke to Gus on a few occasions and I played with him at Spurs. Even before I met him he was someone I admired as a player.

"I have always known over the years that it is a special club with special fans. I'm really looking forward to making my home debut."

Sunderland's next home match will be against Championship side Fulham in the FA Cup on Saturday.
