Lazio president Claudio Lotito has crushed speculation that his side want to sign Mario Balotelli from Liverpool, saying the club do not accumulate star players for the sake of it.

Lotito's Serie A outfit have been linked with making a move to loan Balotelli from Liverpool, where he has struggled since a £16m summer switch from AC Milan.

But Balotelli will find not sanctuary in Rome, with Lotito telling a press conference when asked about a bid for the striker: "After the arrival of Mauricio [a defender signed on loan from Sporting Lisbon] the team is complete in all areas.

"Lazio is not a collection of Panini stickers.

"We will only take players who can do a job to strengthen the team", the Lazio supremo concluded.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who insisted before signing Balotelli that he would not arrive at Anfield, has ruled out parting with the Italian this month.

Nevertheless, the striker continues to be linked with leaving Anfield and has slipped firmly to the fringes at the Merseyside giants.
