West Ham boss Sam Allardyce does not agree with comments made by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on the work permit system which applies to English football, refuting the Frenchman's suggestion rules must be relaxed.

Wenger believes the restrictions on non-EU players are too severe and has advocated scrapping the work permit system to allow English clubs to sign any player from any country in the world.

Wenger pointed to the example of Angel di Maria, saying he identified the winger at the age of just 17, but was unable to sign him as he knew he would not be granted a work permit.

Allardyce however believes the system works to protect young English players, offering them the best chance of developing. And he cannot agree with Wenger's view.

"I don't agree with that at all", Allardyce said via his club's site when asked about Wenger's comments.

"There's always a massive influx of foreign talent coming into academies already.

"As a result we lose the opportunity for young British players to develop.

"As an Englishman that's a real no for me. I think it's important we protect our own, we very rarely do it here.

"We haven't done it up to now, and we need to do it somewhere down the line."

For Allardyce, who is no stranger to signing players from foreign shores, the right balance has been struck, with the rules gaining his approval.

"I think they're fine at the moment. You have the opportunity to get foreign talent in if they are particularly talented. To change it to make it even easier is a big no for me."
