Neil Lennon says Bolton Wanderers' performance away against Liverpool in the FA Cup this evening reminded him of when he bossed Celtic against Barcelona in the Champions League, leaving him proud of his players.

Bolton saw Liverpool dominate possession in the 0-0 draw at Anfield, enjoying 68 per cent of the ball and having 24 shots on goal to Bolton's seven. In total, Liverpool had nine shots on target, while Bolton failed to register one on target.

But the Championship side earned a replay against a team that came within a whisker of winning the Premier League title last term, leaving Lennon delighted.

The former Celtic boss explained to BT Sport: "I am very proud. This team gave everything – for themselves and for the club. They were under immense pressure because of the form Liverpool were in. You know Liverpool will dominate play but we are down to the bare bones so I am happy."

And Lennon compared the encounter to Celtic's games against Barcelona when he was in charge at Paradise.

The Northern Irishman added: "It reminded me of my time at Celtic against Barcelona, you need your goalkeeper to be on their game and to defend well and be disciplined at times."

Now the Bolton manager is relishing the chance to host Liverpool at the Macron Stadium, an occasion he admits will help the Trotters financially.

"It is a great day for the club, the most important thing is we are still in the cup. It will be wonderful [in the replay] there is the money we get and it will be under lights, what is not to like?"
