Former Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has expressed interest in taking over the manager role at the Glaswegian outfit, but admitted the matter is complicated.

Gattuso played one season with the Scottish outfit during 1997/98 before he was transferred to Salernitana, which was followed a move to Italian giants AC Milan, where he made his name as a combative midfielder.

In his highly successful 13-year stay at AC Milan, Gattuso won numerous trophies, which included two Serie A titles, two Champions Leagues, and one Club World Cup. He was also part of the 2006 World Cup winning Italian national team.

Post his playing career, the Italian has gone into management and had his last stint as a manager at Greek outfit OFI Crete. Rangers are without a manager following Ally McCoist being put on gardening leave and caretaker Kenny McDowell resigning.

Gattuso however acknowledges the problems that the Scottish side are embroiled in.

"But now the club has big problems. They need to find a way of solving those”, he was quoted as saying by ITV.

However, he admitted being interested in taking the reins of the club currently lying second in the Scottish Championship.

"Of course I would be interested in the vacancy. I stopped playing two years ago. Now my job is to become a coach. That's normal.

"But at this time the road [to the Rangers job] is far away”, the Italian concluded.
