Newcastle United have named caretaker boss John Carver as their new manager on a deal running through until the end of the season.

Carver has been filling in as Newcastle boss since Alan Pardew left to take charge of fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace.

And the 50-year-old has done enough to convince the Newcastle board that he can steady the ship until the end of the season, when they will again assess who is the right man to lead the Magpies forward.

The development has left Carver proud, with the new boss telling the club's site: "This is a proud day for me.

"I have worked with, and learnt from, the best manager that this football club has had in Sir Bobby Robson. I know what this club means to this city and its people. I believe in my players and the staff I have around me.

"I am confident that we can deliver exciting successful football and look forward with relish to my role as head coach of this great football club", Carver added.

Newcastle currently sit eleventh in the Premier League standings with 27 points from 22 games.

The Magpies have been linked with a whole host of potential managers, including former Lyon boss Remi Garde, current Ajax coach Frank de Boer and Derby County manager Steve McClaren.

Now any decision on who will take over as Newcastle boss on a permanent basis is on hold until the summer.
