Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is certain that their Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund will stave off relegation and if luck favours them could be in contention for Europe.

Pep Guardiola’s side have enjoyed a superlative first half of the season, which sees them lead the Bundesliga with 45 points, 11 clear of their nearest rivals Wolfsburg. In the process, they have scored a league-leading 41 goals and conceded the fewest of all teams with four.

On the other hand, after finishing second in the league behind Bayern Munich last season, Borussia Dortmund have suffered an inexplicable dip in their current Bundesliga campaign as they lie 17th in the table.

Relegation fears have been looming large over Jurgen Klopp’s team as they have collected a mere 15 points at the halfway stage of the season.

However, Rummenigge believes Borussia Dortmund have enough quality to maintain their Bundesliga status, and with a bit of luck they can be challenging for the European spots.

“Borussia Dortmund won’t be relegated, and if they have a bit of luck they might even be in contention for a place in Europe”, Rummeingge told the club site.

“They’ve not had much luck so far this season and they’ve had a lot of injuries, which has obviously been a factor”, he reasoned.

“But they have the quality to win three, four or five games on the trot, and then they’d soon climb the table.”

Borussia Dortmund will resume the second half of their Bundesliga campaign with a visit to the BayArena to take on Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
