Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes new signing Gabriel Paulista’s current lack of ability to understand the English language could well cost his team dearly.

Centre-back Gabriel has been signed from Spanish La Liga outfit Villarreal in a deal that saw forward Joel Campbell go the other way on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Brazilian centre-back had been a constant feature at the Spanish outfit this season, having made 19 appearances for Marcelino Garcia Toral’s side.

But Gabriel does not speak a word of English, meaning that communicating with his defensive colleagues could be difficult initially. And Wenger believes any mix-up in understanding commands due to Gabriel’s unfamiliarity with the English language could prove costly for Arsenal.

“At the moment, he doesn't speak a word of English, and that can cost you goals”, Wenger joked to a press conference yesterday.

“If you mix 'going forwards' with 'going backwards', it can cost you.”

Wenger revealed that the new signing will be included in their squad and could make his Arsenal debut when they host Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. And the Frenchman is also happy with Gabriel's fitness level.

“He's ready to go. He'll be in the squad, certainly.

"He started his training yesterday and looks fit.”
