Louis van Gaal has stressed that Manchester United played as a team yesterday – and that allowed his system to work against Leicester City.

Goals from Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, along with an own goal from Wes Morgan, helped Manchester United register a 3-1 win over the Foxes yesterday at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal decided to ditch his three at the back system to play a more expansive 4-4-2 diamond formation, which he has been reluctant to use in the past as he believed the system lacked balance which led to Manchester United conceding more goals.

However, the system work fined yesterday as Manchester United raced ahead to a 3-0 scoreline at half-time and played more measured football in the second half to kill the game off.

Van Gaal was happy with his side’s performance and believes the system worked against Leicester because Manchester United played as a collective, which provided balance to the formation.

"We played today with four defenders and four midfielders and the balance in the team is also important. I’ve seen today a team that was playing like a team and then you can play with a system like this.
