Former Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa is in talks with MLS side New York City FC over a possible move.

Ben Arfa agreed to terminate his contract at Newcastle recently after he returned from a spell on loan at Hull City after falling out of favour with Tigers boss Steve Bruce.

Ben Arfa agreed to join French side Nice, but was blocked from completing the move due to FIFA rules which state he cannot play for three clubs in a single season.

Now the winger is looking for a club in a league whose season has not yet started and a switch to the MLS, which would be permitted under the rules, is possible.

According to French sports daily L'Equipe, Ben Arfa is now holding talks with New York City FC about a potential switch to the United States.

Ben Arfa does not want to kick his heels and be forced to wait until the beginning of the 2015/16 season in Europe to play football once again.

And that makes the MLS an attractive proposition for the 27-year-old.

Were he to move to New York City FC he would link up with former Barcelona striker David Villa.
