Manchester United are ready to offer £30m for Real Madrid’s young French international defender Raphael Varane in the summer.

Louis van Gaal is believed to be looking for a top class defender in the summer to add strength and depth to the Manchester United’s rearguard for next season.

A number of defenders have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but Real Madrid’s 21-year-old centre half Varane has caught the eye of the Dutchman and he is keen to get a deal done for him in the summer.

Though Varane is a regular starter in Didier Deschamps’ French national team, he is yet to be assured of a starting spot at Real Madrid and is often the third-choice behind the more experienced duo of Sergio Ramos and Pepe.

His contract with the club runs until 2020 and the Real Madrid hierarchy see him as a big part of their future, but Varane is believed to be looking for assurances regarding a starting berth for next season.

Manchester United are ready to take advantage of the situation and according to Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, they are prepared to pay £30m in the summer to take Varane to Old Trafford.

Real Madrid are desperate not to lose the player at the end of the season, but if the Frenchman, who is also on Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s radar, doesn’t receive any guarantees about his status in the squad, he might be ready to leave for a club such as Manchester United, where he would be expected to be a first choice centre half.
