Chelsea striker Didier Drogba believes that the Blues’ 2005 League Cup triumph was a precursor for the success that they have achieved since.

Drogba joined Jose Mourinho’s side in the summer of 2004 from Marseille and his arrival coincided with the most successful period in the London outfit’s history.

The League Cup in 2005 was the first trophy that Chelsea won after Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich bought the club in June 2003. The Pensioners then went on to win the 2004/05 Premier League and successfully defended their title a year later.

During his eight-year first stint at Stamford Bridge, Drogba went on to win three Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, two League Cups and the Champions League in the 2011/12 season.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's League Cup final, the Ivorian believes that the success story for the Blues began with their 3-2 triumph over Liverpool in the League Cup in February 2005.

“That first trophy gave us more confidence for the future”, Drogba told the club site.

“Not only for the two league wins, but for two years later when we won the FA Cup and that cup again.

“It feeds your appetite for titles and finals and you want to be in finals and you want to experience these kind of moments again”, he concluded.

Drogba will get a chance to further add to his trophy collection when Chelsea play Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the League Cup at Wembley this Sunday.
