Louis van Gaal admits that Wayne Rooney went against his advice when it came to taking a penalty against Sunderland today.

Rooney stepped up to take a spot-kick for the Red Devils at Old Trafford in the 66th minute. He made no mistake, guiding the ball into the back of the net to put Manchester United 1-0 ahead in the game and end Sunderland's resistance.

But after the match Van Gaal admitted that he regularly advises Rooney to strike the ball high from penalties, while the skipper chose to go low instead to beat the Sunderland goalkeeper.

"I’m always happy when a player is scoring. And I’m happy he scored twice", he told a press conference.

"He’s the second penalty-taker behind [Robin] van Persie.

"Normally I tell him to shoot high on penalties, but he said he shot low because of the goalkeeper’s height."

Rooney added a second in the 84th minute to make sure of a vital three Premier League points for Manchester United, who are now third in the standings with 50 points from 27 games.

Next up for Van Gaal's men is a trip to face Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.
