Manchester United winger Ashley Young believes it is time they switch gears and go on a winning run to secure a top four place this season.

After an average first half performance, Manchester United dominated the game after the break against Sunderland and found the opening when Wes Brown was sent off for denying Radamel Falcao a clear goalscoring opportunity. Wayne Rooney converted the resultant penalty and added one more later in the half to secure all three points at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal’s men moved up to third in the league table for the time being and Young feels the time is right for them to go on a late season winning run to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

“I think it’s vitally important [securing wins towards the tail-end of the campaign]”, the winger told MUTV.

“I think it’s the United way – picking up [lots of] points after the turn of the year.”

Manchester United will travel to the north east of England on Wednesday to take on Newcastle United and Young admits that an away trip to St. James’ Park is never an easy fixture for anyone in the league. However, if they can maintain the same level of intensity that they showed against Sunderland yesterday, then he is confident that the Red Devils will secure a positive result against John Carver’s men.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game on Wednesday away to Newcastle”, the winger explained.

“We’ve always found it tough up there – but as long as we can play in the way we did [against Sunderland] and add to that, then I’m sure we can go on and get three points.”

Manchester United hammered Newcastle United 4-0 at St. James’ Park last season.
