Olivier Giroud has thanked Arsene Wenger for giving him the opportunity to redeem himself following a poor midweek performance against Monaco.

Giroud saw his performance in the midweek Champions League match criticised, with the striker missing a whole host of goalscoring opportunites, as Arsenal went down to a 3-1 defeat to the Ligue 1 outfit.

Wenger dropped defender Per Mertesacker to the bench for today's Premier League clash against Everton, as at least one man paid the price for not performing well against Monaco.

Giroud though kept his place as Wenger gave the striker a big vote of confidence, and he duly scored the first of Arsenal's goals in a 2-0 win over Everton, bouncing back from his Monaco disappointment.

"Arsene Wenger gave me the possibility to bounce back", Giroud told BT Sport.

"We wanted to do that together and I think we did well this afternoon. We started on the front foot and pressed them high.

"We will take things step-by-step. We just want to focus on our games, we just need to keep doing what we are doing", he added.

Arsenal have moved up to third spot in the Premier League with the victory, jumping above Louis van Gaal's Manchester United.

However, the Gunners' lead over the Red Devils is just one point, while Liverpool are three points back in fifth.
