Former Dutch international midfielder and Feyenoord coach Willem van Hanegem has criticised Manchester United-linked PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay for his selfish play against Ajax this weekend and stressed that he can never become a top player as long as he doesn’t change his attitude.

Ajax registered a comfortable 3-1 away win at the Philips Stadion against league leaders PSV Eindhoven. Though they are still maintaining a comfortable eleven-point lead over Frank de Boer’s side, PSV came in for serious criticism for their lacklustre performance at home.

Van Hanegem has laid into some of the PSV players for their performance against Ajax and believes they need to realise that football is a team game.

One of the players who has come in for the 71-year-old’s fire was Depay and he stressed that the winger needs to sort out his attitude before he thinks about becoming a top player.

The winger has been regularly linked with a big money move to Manchester United, but Van Hanegem believes he will never be a top player unless he understands the importance of the playing for the team.

“PSV have good players, but they are not a good team”, Van Hanegem wrote in his column for the Algemeen Dagblad.

“As long as Depay doesn’t realise that [the importance of team play] he will never be a good player.

"He is now only playing for himself.”
