Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side produced their best match of the season this evening after they grabbed a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

Both sides had chances from the off in the Premier League clash at St. James' Park, but neither could find a breakthrough in the first half.

David de Gea was in good form between the sticks for Manchester United when Newcastle did threaten, but as the clock ticked down it appeared as if the match would end 0-0 and the visitors drop two points in the race for a top four Premier League spot.

But in the final minute of the game, Wayne Rooney played in Ashley Young, who fired the ball home to put Manchester United 1-0 up.

It proved enough to secure victory and left Van Gaal raving about the performance of his troops.

"I think we have dominated for 90 minutes, maybe our best match of the season, especially in an away match we deserved the victory", Van Gaal told the BBC.

"We didn't reward ourselves in the first half. It was a narrow escape because our rivals have won also so it's a rat race.

"We have created a lot of chances and could have scored much earlier. They also made two big chances and I think David de Gea rescued us at that time."

And Van Gaal said he was delighted with his side's fighting spirit.

"It was a crazy run from Wayne Rooney, a lost ball, that shows the fighting spirit in this team. We want to win. All my changes were to win, not to hold the result."
