Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets suffered an ankle injury during his team’s win over Villarreal in the Spanish Cup and he is expected to miss the Champions League tie against Manchester City as a result.

The Catalan giants defeated Villarreal 3-1 in the second leg of their Spanish Cup semi-final tie to seal a 6-2 aggregate win and make the final of the domestic competition where they will play Athletic Bilbao on 30th May.

Amid their win, Barcelona suffered a major injury setback when Busquets went off injured in the 42nd minute following an ugly challenge from Tomas Pina. The midfielder was left clutching his right ankle and had to be carried away on a stretcher.

A statement released by the club site stated, “Midfielder Sergio Busquets suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle. Busquets will undergo more tests on Thursday to discover the exact extent of the injury according to the club's medical staff.”

The initial diagnosis suggests that the Barcelona stalwart could be facing several weeks on the sidelines, as a result, he is expected to miss the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Manchester City due to be played at the Camp Nou on 18th March.

In his post-match comments, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique remained non-committal on the extent of the midfielder’s injury.

“That was the only black note about the game; we’re waiting news, he could be out for just a few days or it could be longer – we’ll see what the test results tell us”, he was quoted as saying by AS.

In the 26-year-old’s absence, Javier Mascherano is likely to play as defensive midfielder for the Catalans.
