Former Manchester United goalkeeper and current Ajax marketing director Edwin van der Sar admits becoming a goalkeeping coach is always an option for him.

Van der Sar had been tipped to follow in the footsteps of a number of former Ajax players by swapping the pitch for the dugout and taking his coaching qualifications when he hung up his boots.

But the Dutchman surprised many by instead opting to take the role of marketing director at the Amsterdam ArenA.

He has had his role questioned and admits that he still has to adapt to the demands of working as a director at Ajax. And Van der Sar admits that he could always fall back on becoming a goalkeeping coach.

"I think I could be a good goalkeeping coach", the Dutchman told ELF Voetbal.

"That is an option I always have in my bag, I suppose.

"As a goalkeeper, I was not always at the top, that's what it was like in the beginning. It was about trial and error. And that also applies to my current job", the Ajax director added.

In his playing days Van der Sar was voted the Best European Goalkeeper in both 1995 and 2009 and won the UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year accolade in 2009.

The 44-year-old won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 and Manchester United in 2008. He also picked up four Eredivisie titles at Ajax and four Premier League titles with Manchester United.
