Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn believes that his strikers Billy Sharp and Steve Morison showed the way to get promoted from the Championship after producing a tireless performance against Wigan Athletic yesterday.

Redfearn sprung a surprise by naming both in his starting line-up at the DW Stadium – and they did not let their head coach down, working hard and chasing down lost causes throughout the 90 minutes as the Whites ran out 1-0 winners.

Their display was not lost on Redfearn, who feels the pair have taken to heart what he has been preaching in terms of earning promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

"They ran their socks off and that's what I've been getting", Redfearn told BBC Radio Leeds.

"The bottom line is that's what makes sides get promoted. In the greater scheme of things that's how you go up.

"It's the only way out of this division.

"You've got to scrap your way out, be prepared to do all that and when you get your chance you've got to play your football", the former midfielder added.

With their win over Wigan yesterday, Leeds have now pulled to 16 points clear of the Championship relegation zone and are closer to the playoffs (15 points) than to the drop.

Next up for the Whites is a visit from an in-form Nottingham Forest side on Saturday.
